2016-17 FREE CITP CONCERT SERIES
THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS - CHARLES LINDSAY-BOWMAN
2016-2017 FREE Community Concerts in the Park is over – flew by – overs!
What did we do right in bringing the very best Artists to De Waal Park?? Well, in this Series we brought over 35,000 people together from all over Cape Town; of all different colours, religions and walks of life and that’s all Concerts in the Park is about – that’s it – that’s the only “reason d’etre” of Concerts in the Park. So that was good. Seems everyone enjoyed themselves – no argy bargy at all – not one incident other than the Lady from 3 streets away who slapped my face because she didn’t like the noise – years since a Lady slapped me; made me feel young again. Rob Gilmour the RSAWEB-OCTOTEL entrepreneur said to me right at the very beginning when this great young Community conscious Company decided to sponsor CITP npc that what he wanted and I quote - “above all else for people to go away feeling they have had an enjoyable afternoon experience” - for sure that happened. Of course without RSAWEB – OCTOTEL and the Mayor’s Office Sponsoring it wouldn’t – couldn’t have happened – there wouldn’t have been one single concert – so there you go, we all owe them a big – huge – ginormous THANK YOU.
The absolute basis for an enjoyable afternoons experience are Toilets – that’s right – you can have Frank Sinatra there and no toilets = no one happy at all. We didn’t have sufficient at the previous series. Cape Town City Parks once again came to the rescue and provided 27 additional Toilets at their expense – a huge huge contribution.
We had food Vendors this time and this added to the fun and convenience. We had to boost up the security to conform to the quite right regulations (thanks Daniel) and though it also boosted up the costs by plenty - FIDELITY GUARDS were hugely helpful and sponsored their involvement.
The Artists were fantastic and it was so obvious that they enjoyed this totally different performing environment and mixed and mingled with all, signing autographs and doing “selfies”. The P A sound was markedly improved with over a million Rands worth of equipment at each Concert, all provided, bless you Bradley, by Coca Cola who have been just unbelievable in their support of these community concerts. Thanks to Michelle, with her new blonde hair – looks super - of Thriveonline who handled all the S.M stuff with such enthusiasm. And thanks to Jodi & Andrew of SCAR Hair, quite wild the two of them, and indeed Chris Boje, a gentleman and Sportsman to boot, owner of van Hunks Restaurant who both gave such huge prizes for every single concert
We distributed Posters in 150 shops with the full Calendar of the Concerts that should have taken place. Due to the intransience of the Wynberg SAP and the lack of sponsorship for the Barleycorn Festival, one concert had to be moved and the other had to be cancelled, so the Calendar dates and venues changed. It was impossible to know where all the shop displays were, causing some confusion. This will not be repeated.
The photography and video interviews at some of the Concerts were not to Concerts in the Park standards and the bar will definitely be raised.
The try-out of charging a nominal parking fee in the Lower De Waal Park with the collaboration once again of the wonderful Parks dept. didn’t pan out quite as planned due to a group of very aggressive gangsters removing a temporary closure at one of the entrances in order to wave in cars hoping for money for themselves. This negated the collection of funds both for the Park and your community Concerts; another learning curve.
So now it’s all over and here we go again planning the next series of FREE Community Concerts in the Park hopefully starting next November, albeit subject to our remarkable Sponsors RSAWEB, OCTOTEL, The MAYCO, COCO COLA and a sought additional Sponsor. We trust the wunderfull Zolani – Freshlyground, The Rudimentals, Jimmy Nevis, and Fokoffpoliciekar would be nice, plus a couple of big bands from overseas (aka Johannesburg), will feature.
Thank you all for the incredible number of appreciation emails, SMS’s and being stopped in the streets – it makes it all worthwhile for all involved and associated with CONCERTS IN THE PARK.
Ciao Paisanos, Charles
