REPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS - CHARLES LINDSAY-BOWMAN
2016-2017 FREE Community Concerts in the Park is over – flew by – overs!
What did we do right in bringing the very best Artists to De Waal Park?? Well we brought in this Series over 35,000 people together from all over Cape Town of all different colours, religion and walks of life and that’s all Concerts in the Park is about – that’s it – that’s the only “reason d’etre” of Concerts in the Park. So that was good. Seems everyone enjoyed themselves – no argy bargy at all – not one incident other than the Lady from 3 streets away who slapped my face because she didn’t like the noise – years since a Lady slapped me; made me feel young again. Rob Gilmour the RSAWEB-OCTOTEL entrepreneur said to me right at the very beginning when this great young Community conscious Company decided to sponsor CITP npc that what he wanted and I quote “above all else for people to go away feeling they have had an enjoyable afternoon experience ” for sure that happened. Of course without RSAWEB – OCTOTEL and the Mayor’s Office Sponsoring it wouldn’t – couldn’t have happened – there wouldn’t have been one single concert – so there you go we all owe them a big – huge – ginormous THANK YOU.

SKYSCRAPERS ON UPWARD TRAJECTORY
The Skyscrapers were formed when Leo and Dan started playing together in early 2015 when they were only in Grade 4. They needed a singer for a concert they were doing, so they asked Mila if she’d be keen to join them as they'd heard her sing before and felt that she would fit right into the musical direction they were going in.
That was in 2015 - since then they’ve recorded an album, played many gigs, and been on national TV!
LITTLEGIG, BIG VISION
Littlegig was founded by Georgia Black, who is also the manager of the Skyscrapers. She was inspired to start it when she realized that there wasn’t enough quality entertainment for more discerning audiences happening on the Cape Town nightlife scene.
What started out as a series of concerts less than two years ago and has since grown into a 24-hour, all-included music, food and design festival for about 2,000 people, held once a year in Stellenbosch.
BECAUSE GIVING A WOOF IS NO BARKING MATTER
So, who is the lovely lady in the pic?
Johannie Coetzee, a long-time generous supporter of Concerts in the Park's, daughter Joanne, that's who. This extraordinary lady has for years made it her life's work to broadcast the plight of thousands of homeless and uncared for dogs, not just in S.A, but literally all over the world! This dog philanthropist is putting her money where her mouth is and making it possible for dogs of all ages and breeds to find happiness, security and love in country after country.
Joanne's new endeavour, the Woof Project, is one that will reach many more people who can help turn her vision, her reason d’etre, into actually changing the lives of our wonderful furry friends and see them becoming a beloved member of a family.
Come along and meet a new four-legged friend – take him or her for a walk round our beautiful park, fall in love and change your life and theirs into a new enchanted haven.

THE FOOD STUFF OF LEGENDS
Owner Chris Boje and his wife, Suzanne, were living in Stanford and running their guesthouse when they received the news that they were expecting a baby. Says Chris, "This meant that our peaceful life in the country had come to an abrupt end, and that we needed to return to the city and "get real jobs"'.
Chris had been in the entertainment industry before. He and Manie, now owner of Roeland Liquors, opened the Shack back in 1995. They also had a restaurant, Papa Luke's, as well as a live music venue, The Jam together.
Chris started looking for a suitable venue to open a restaurant and bar, with a strong local flavor. In May 2010, Van Hunks opened its doors to the public and has since been attracting a steady stream of locals and visitors alike.
As Chris says of the food and ambience, 'We aim to serve good quality homely food at reasonable prices, very reasonably priced local wines, and a wide selection of local beers, combined with friendly efficient service. We have two warm fireplaces in winter and a large outdoor area for warmer evenings. It's the view of Devil's Peak from one of of our decks that lead to the name Van Hunks. Having wanted to do something local; what better than a legend and some folklore?'
Van Hunks is open seven days a week, so pop in for one of their daily specials, and don't forget to try the ribs if that's your sort of thing. They are made according to Ouma's recipe, and are said by many to be the best this side of the mighty Liesbeeck river.
CREATING ART OUT OF PIXELS
PixelART is a collaboration between Shawn Levin & Mark Breetzke - created to explore and share the artistic world of photography. Inspired by the possibility of capturing a moment of life's essence we have teamed our skills and resources to achieve something quite unique. A point-of-view that is inspired by our many passions, including; the wonders of nature, the mystery of travel and culture, the expressive character of people, the instinctive nature of animals and other unusual phenomena where light, shadow and colour play. With a history of successful businesses in the fields of video production, music and audio-visual systems design, we have accumulated a variety of skills in both the creative, artistic and technical arenas. With this passion for the artistic, combined with our experience in all things technical and digital, we balance this illusive formula to produce something quite unique.
Our photographs are moments captured in time, that tell stories and simultaneously have a value and meaning in the real world - which is quite distinctive of our brand. Our philosophy is to work closely with people and offer a reliable, authentic and professional experience. It can be a lot of fun, it’s always more hours than it seems and you’re sure to meet interesting characters and have some fascinating adventures.
